A fan does not cool — and that changes everything

A fan does not lower the room temperature. It moves air, and moving air speeds the evaporation of sweat from skin — which is why you feel cooler while the thermometer does not change.

Two practical consequences worth knowing. First: there is no point running it in an empty room — it cools people, not spaces. Second: in very high heat and humidity, where sweat does not evaporate, the benefit drops noticeably.

The trade-off: it uses a fraction of the electricity of an air conditioner. On a Greek July night, a fan beside the bed costs almost nothing and is often enough.

What is available and who it suits

Handheld and neck fans. The large category here — Jisulife and AECOOLY are the names. Rechargeable, they fit in a bag and work at a bus stop, on the metro, at a concert or at a wedding in August. Neck fans leave your hands free.

Desk fans. For an office or bedside table. Small, low consumption, focused airflow.

Floor and pedestal fans. For a whole room. Adjustable height and oscillation, so the air covers a larger area.

Bladeless fans. Safer with children and pets, easier to clean, usually quieter.

Three things that make the difference

Noise. If it will run in a bedroom all night, it is the most critical specification — more important than power. A powerful but noisy fan simply will not be used at night.

Timer. You set it to stop in two hours, fall asleep cool and do not wake at four in a cold draught.

Cleaning. A fan collects dust on the blades and scatters it through the room every time you switch it on — important if anyone has allergies. Models with a removable grille clean in five minutes; the rest never get cleaned.
