Why it beats running the heating
It is the most practical argument: an electric blanket warms you, not the whole room. It uses very little electricity compared with keeping the heating on all night so one person does not get cold.
There is a second use that matters to many: a pre-warmed bed. Switch it on twenty minutes before, the bed is warm when you get in, and then you turn it off. For older people, cold bedrooms and anyone who struggles to get warm, it makes a real difference.
And heated pads for neck, back and abdomen are a different use: targeted heat for stiffness or pain, not general warming.
Blanket or underblanket?
Underblanket. It goes under the sheet and warms the mattress. It is the more efficient option: the heat rises and is trapped by the bedding, and you never even see it.
Blanket. It goes on top. Useful on the sofa for television, or for anyone who wants an immediate sense of warmth from above.
The rule that applies to both: never folded or creased while running. Folds concentrate heat in one spot and stress the heating elements.
Safety: what it must have and what you must not do
Automatic shut-off. It switches itself off after a set number of hours. It is the feature that must not be missing, especially if you fall asleep with it on.
Washing. Many are washable, but always with the controller detached and never in a tumble dryer. And never used before it is completely dry.
Storage. Rolled, not folded into a square. Permanent creases break the internal wires — and a broken element is a hazard, not merely a fault.
When it must not be used. On infants, on people who cannot operate the controls or perceive overheating, and in cases of reduced sensation — such as advanced diabetes. If in doubt, ask a doctor.
And never a blanket with a damaged cable or scorch marks. It is not repaired — it is replaced.
