The damp problem in Greece
In coastal areas, on ground floors and in homes without adequate insulation, damp is a permanent issue through the winter months. The signs are familiar: black spots in ceiling corners, misted windows in the morning, a musty smell in wardrobes, clothes that stay damp.
It is not only a comfort matter. Mould affects breathing, particularly for people with asthma or allergies, and it destroys plaster, wood and fabrics.
A dehumidifier does not cover up the problem — it removes the cause, which is excess moisture in the air.
The level to aim for
Ideal relative humidity in a home is around 45% to 55%. Above 60% favours mould and dust mites; below 40% dries out airways and furniture.
Current dehumidifiers have a humidistat: you set the percentage and the device runs only when needed. Without one, it runs constantly and wastes electricity.
What to check
Extraction in litres per day. This is the key figure. A small unit is enough for a bedroom; a living room, basement or whole flat needs a larger one. A small unit in a large space runs endlessly with no result.
Tank or continuous drainage. The tank fills and needs emptying — in a very damp space, daily. Models with an outlet for a continuous drainage hose settle the matter permanently if there is a drain nearby.
Noise. If it will run in a bedroom at night, it is a critical specification.
Laundry drying mode. Useful in winter in a flat with no balcony — it dries clothes faster and at the same time keeps their moisture out of the room.
