An air cooler is not an air conditioner

This is the most important distinction in the category, and it is worth being clear about before you buy.

An air cooler lowers temperature by evaporating water. It works on the same principle that makes a damp towel on a balcony feel cool. It needs only water, uses a fraction of an air conditioner’s electricity, and requires no installation.

But here is what matters: it only works well in dry air. In high humidity — which describes many coastal parts of Greece in August — performance drops sharply, because the air cannot take up more moisture. And it adds humidity to the room, which in a closed space makes it feel worse.

The portable air conditioner and its hose

A portable air conditioner genuinely cools the air, like a fixed unit. But it has a requirement many people discover after buying: it must exhaust hot air outside through a hose.

That means a window left ajar with the supplied kit, or a hole in the wall. Without an outlet, the unit simply moves heat around the same room and eventually warms it.

A second point: the open window lets warm air in, so performance is lower than a fixed air conditioner of the same rating. It is the trade-off of portability — and the right choice in a rented flat or anywhere installation is not permitted.

Which solution for which case

Dry climate, balcony or covered outdoor space → an air cooler. There it genuinely performs and costs almost nothing to run.

A rented flat or a room with no air conditioning → a portable air conditioner, provided there is a window for the hose.

Most days of the summer → a fan. It costs almost nothing, needs no water or hose, and for cooling a person it is enough.

And a practical note on air coolers: the water tank needs emptying and cleaning. Water standing for days in a tank creates smells and bacteria that are then blown into the room.

Frequently asked questions

Is an air cooler an air conditioner?
No. It cools by evaporating water and only works well in dry air. In high humidity performance drops sharply.
Does a portable air conditioner need a hose?
Yes, absolutely. Without an outlet for hot air, the unit warms the room instead of cooling it.
Does it use much electricity?
An air cooler very little. A portable air conditioner considerably more, but less than a large fixed unit.
How often do I empty the water?
Regularly. Water standing for days creates smells and bacteria that get blown into the room.
Which solution for a balcony?
An air cooler or a fan. A portable air conditioner makes no sense in an open space.

In dry air, an air cooler cools at minimal cost. In humidity, a fan is often the better choice.
