Where it genuinely earns its place

A student flat or bedsit. Where there is no built-in kitchen, a portable hob covers all the cooking in minimal space and with no installation.

Holiday homes and boats. An appliance that lives in a cupboard and comes out only when needed.

An extra ring at Christmas. When you cook for ten and four rings are not enough, a portable hob on the worktop solves it.

When the cooker breaks. A same-day solution until the engineer arrives, at a fraction of the repair cost.

Induction or heating element?

Heating element. It warms a metal plate which in turn warms the pan. It works with any pan — and that is its great advantage. Slower, and it stays hot for a while after you switch off.

Induction. It heats the pan directly with a magnetic field. Far faster, more economical, and the surface does not get hot — a serious safety advantage with children around.

The critical point: induction needs magnetic pans. Test with a magnet on the base of your pot — if it sticks, it works. Aluminium and many stainless pans do not.

Power and safety

Mind the power draw relative to your wiring. A double hob draws serious current — on old wiring alongside other appliances, it can trip the breaker.

Never on a power strip or extension lead — only straight into a wall socket. It is one of the few household appliances where this is not a recommendation but a safety requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Will induction work with my pans?
Only if they are magnetic. Test with a magnet on the base — if it sticks, it works. Aluminium and many stainless pans will not.
Induction or heating element?
Induction for speed, economy and safety. A heating element if you want it to work with any pan.
Can I plug it into a power strip?
No. Only straight into a wall socket — it draws high current and strips overheat.
Does it replace a cooker?
For a bedsit, a holiday home or as a temporary solution, yes. A double hob covers most everyday cooking.

First check whether your pans are magnetic — that decides whether you buy induction or a heating element model.
