What they actually do
Let us be honest: a cooling pad with fans does not transform a laptop’s temperature. The cooling happens inside the machine and its own fan does the work.
What it does do, and this has real value, is two things. First: it keeps the intake vents clear. Most laptops draw air from underneath, and when they sit on a table, a bed or a blanket the air simply does not reach. A stand lifts them and solves exactly that.
Second: it raises the screen to a better height. If you work for hours on a laptop, tilt and height change your posture more than you would expect — and for most people that is the real benefit.
With fans or passive?
With fans — helps when the laptop works hard for hours, or in a warm room. Mind the noise: a pad with cheap fans can be louder than the laptop itself.
Passive stand — metal or aluminium, with no moving parts. It lifts, tilts, helps airflow and makes no noise. For most office users it is the better choice.
Before you buy
Check that the stand supports your laptop size — a stand for 15 inches leaves a 17-inch machine hanging over. See whether the tilt is adjustable, because one fixed angle does not suit everyone. And if you will carry it, prefer a folding stand that fits in a bag.
