When it is the right choice
The all-in-one solves one specific problem: space and cables. At a reception desk, in a kitchen, in a small office or on a shared table at home, a machine with a single power cable is noticeably cleaner than a tower, a monitor and five cables.
It is also ready out of the box: unpack, plug in, work. There is no assembly, no compatibility question, nothing to choose.
What you give up
Upgradability. On most models you can at best change memory or the drive, and on several not even that. The graphics card and processor never change. In practice, you are buying the machine you will still have in four years — so do not buy it marginal.
The screen as a separate part. If the display fails, you do not replace a monitor — you have a problem with the whole machine. That is why display quality counts double here: you keep it as long as you keep the computer.
What to check
16GB of memory from the start, because it may not be upgradable. An SSD without question. Screen resolution and size, since it is all you will be looking at for years. VESA mounting, if you plan to hang it on an arm or a wall.
Camera and microphone — most have them built in, which is practical for video calls with no extra equipment.
