What a drum is
The drum is the roller that "paints" the image with toner and transfers it to paper. On many laser printers it is a separate consumable from the toner and lasts through several toner changes.
When the drum wears out, prints show repeating lines, smudges or a grey background — even when the toner is new. Many printers also display a "replace drum" message.
Compatible or original
Most drums on this page are Activejet compatibles, designed as replacements for the original. The original part number is in the title — for example the Activejet DRB-2590N replaces the Brother DR-2590. For Brother we also stock original drums.
After fitting a new drum, many Brother printers need the drum counter reset from the printer menu.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I know I need a drum and not toner?
- If the printer message says drum, or prints show lines and smudges while the toner is new, the problem is the drum.
- How do I find the right compatible?
- Search by the original drum code (e.g. DR-2590) — it appears in the title of every compatible product.
- How often does the drum need replacing?
- It depends on the printer, but it usually lasts through several toner changes. The page yield is stated on the product.
