Find your toner by its code
The toner code is printed on the cartridge and in the printer manual. For HP the number is followed by a letter — A is standard yield and X high yield. For Brother, XL and XXL versions give more pages in the same printer.
Xerox and Lexmark use numeric codes (e.g. 006R04395, 522H) — search for them exactly as written on the cartridge.
Toner and drum: two separate consumables
On many laser printers — mostly Brother — the toner (the powder) and the drum (the unit that transfers the image to paper) are separate. The drum usually lasts through several toner changes. If prints show lines or smudges while the toner is new, it is probably time for a drum.
Original or compatible?
Original toner guarantees the manufacturer's page yield and clean printing with no warnings. For offices with high print volumes, see the compatible toners too.
Frequently asked questions
- What do A and X mean on HP toners?
- A is standard page yield and X is high yield. They fit the same printer — X simply lasts longer.
- Do I need to replace the drum too?
- On printers with a separate drum, yes — but less often than the toner. On others, such as many HP models, the drum is built into the cartridge.
- How should I store toner?
- Sealed in its packaging, lying flat, away from sunlight and moisture.
