NVR or DVR? The distinction that decides everything

They are not interchangeable, and the choice depends entirely on what cameras you have or will install.

NVR (network). It works with IP cameras connected by network cable. The camera sends a digital signal, so quality depends on the camera rather than the recorder. It is the standard in any new installation.

DVR (analogue). It works with analogue cameras on coaxial cable. Its value today is that it reuses existing cabling — if a building already has coax from an old system, a current DVR upgrades the image without opening walls.

One point that solves many installation problems: NVRs with PoE power the cameras through the same network cable. One cable per camera instead of two — and no need for a socket beside every position.

How much storage is needed

Everyone asks, and the answer depends on three things: how many cameras, at what resolution, and how many days you want to keep.

The practical way to think about it: more cameras and higher resolution mean faster filling. When the disk is full, the recorder overwrites the oldest footage — so capacity determines how far back you can look.

The rule that matters: think how many days will pass before you notice an incident. If you are away at weekends or travel, two days of footage is not enough. Most installations aim for two weeks.

And a technical point that costs money: use a drive built for recorders, not an ordinary computer drive. A recorder writes continuously, around the clock — an ordinary drive is not designed for that and fails far sooner.

What to check before buying

Channel count. How many cameras it takes. Buy one size above what you are fitting now — almost every installation expands.

Maximum resolution per channel. A recorder that does not support your cameras’ resolution downgrades them. You pay for resolution that is never recorded.

Brand compatibility. Recorders work best with cameras from the same company. In a mixed system, advanced features are lost even if the basic image works.

Remote access. Viewing from a phone is a given today — but change the factory password immediately. Recorders with default passwords are among the most common targets online.

Frequently asked questions about recorders

NVR or DVR?
NVR for IP cameras on network cable — the standard for a new installation. DVR for analogue, if coaxial cabling already exists.
How much storage do I need?
It depends on how many cameras, at what resolution and how many days you want to keep. Most installations aim for two weeks.
Will an ordinary computer drive do?
Better not. A recorder writes around the clock — it needs a drive built for continuous recording.
What is PoE?
Powering the camera through the same network cable. One cable instead of two and no socket needed beside the camera.
Does it work with another brand cameras?
Usually yes for the basic image, but advanced features are lost. The same brand gives the full result.

Choose based on the cameras you have or will install, buy one size up in channels — and change the factory password on day one.
