Three films – and all three passed a billion
Very few franchises in cinema history have three films that each crossed the billion-dollar mark. Avatar is one of them.
- Avatar (2009) – $2.92 billion. Still the highest-grossing film of all time.
- The Way of Water (2022) – $2.33 billion. Third of all time.
- Fire and Ash (2025) – $1.48 billion.

Fire and Ash – the third film
It opened on 19 December 2025 and held the top spot at the box office for five consecutive weekends.
The story brings a double threat: the returning human forces, and the Mangkwan – a new, war-driven Na'vi tribe allied with them.
At $1.48 billion it is the lowest of the three – yet it was the third highest-grossing film of the whole of 2025. The benchmark is simply extraordinarily high.
Its production budget is estimated at $350 to $400 million – among the most expensive films ever made.

Honesty is needed here: the next film is years away.
Avatar 4 – scheduled for December 2029.
Avatar 5 – December 2031.
Cameron has said the fourth is "very likely", without a definitive confirmation having been given.
One interesting detail: a third of the fourth film has already been shot. The reason is practical – the child actors are growing up, and those scenes had to be filmed at the right age.
Part of the fifth film will be set on Earth – a first for the series.
Why Avatar sells things other franchises do not
There is something unusual about this collection, and it comes from the world itself.
Pandora glows. The plants, the ground, the animals, even the Na'vi skin are bioluminescent in the dark.
In practice: this is why Avatar is one of very few franchises where lamps, lights and decor genuinely sell. It is not simply "a product with a print on it" – the aesthetic of the world is luminous in itself.
