Gunpla kits are snap-fit: the parts click together and the plastic is already coloured. No modelling experience is required. The one thing that helps is a pair of nippers – they cost very little and give a clean finish.

- Which kit for a first build?
- An HG – or an EG if it is for a child. The classic RX-78-2 is always a good choice, being the most recognisable design.
- Do I need tools?
- Not strictly, but a pair of model nippers makes a real difference to the finish. Scissors or fingernails leave marks on the parts.
- What age are they suitable for?
- EG and SD kits suit around 8 and up with a little help. MG and PG are for teenagers and adults – they carry hundreds of small parts.
- Do I need to have watched the anime?
- No. Plenty of people build Gunpla purely as model kits. Bandai's engineering stands on its own, independently of the series.
