In practice, though, it is one of the best-loved stories about a teacher ever written. The class are the school's "failures" – and he is the first person to take them seriously.
The humour is classroom comedy, not violence – and the ending is among the most moving in the genre.
He is yellow, round, with a permanent grin – and looks nothing like a threat. That is the whole joke.

The manga was completed in 2016 and has sold more than twenty-seven million copies. The character list is final – a collection can genuinely be completed.
The anime runs to two seasons, forty-seven episodes – but it skipped parts of the manga for time. For anyone who watched the series, the manga is the natural next step.
In March 2026 a new film opened in Japan – the first in ten years, with the entire original voice cast, showing exactly the parts the anime had skipped.
No international release or dub has been confirmed. The manga, however, already contains those stories.
