EVANGELION - Test Type 01 - Figure Figurizma 30cm

This FIGURIZMα figurine from SEGA Goods depicts the Evangelion Test Type-01, more commonly known as EVA-01 or Evangelion Unit-01, the iconic unit piloted by Shinji Ikari in Evangelion. Made from PVC, it stands approximately 30 cm tall and strikes a particularly upright and spectacular pose, designed to highlight the EVA’s characteristic slender proportions.

Unit-01 is reproduced in its instantly recognisable colour scheme, dominated by purple and complemented by green, black and orange elements. The sculpture captures its distinctive design, halfway between a humanoid organism and mechanical armour, with its narrow torso, long legs and the imposing pylons positioned behind the shoulders.

The pose depicts the EVA-01 standing with its legs spread wide apart and one arm stretched vertically towards the sky. This unusual posture gives the figurine a strong presence and allows its considerable height to be shown off to full effect. The sculpting work on the various armour plates and the colour contrasts emphasise the angular lines of Unit-01’s design.

This item is part of SEGA’s FIGURIZMα range, a collection developed around three main themes: expressiveness, finish and colour scheme, to which the manufacturer adds extra attention to the posing of each character or machine.

Character background and universe (Lore)

Evangelion Unit-01 is one of the central machines in the Evangelion saga. Officially designated as a ‘multi-purpose artificial humanoid weapon’, it is one of the Evangelions used by the NERV organisation to combat the mysterious Angels threatening humanity. Unlike ordinary robots, the Evangelions possess a biological nature concealed beneath their imposing armour. The official website specifically uses the term ‘artificial multi-purpose humanoid Evangelion’ to describe Unit-01.

Its primary pilot is Shinji Ikari, a 14-year-old teenager summoned to NERV headquarters when the city of Tokyo-3 comes under attack. In Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Shinji is forced to board the EVA-01 for the first time in order to face an Angel. Despite his lack of experience, he gradually becomes the unit’s designated pilot and, alongside Rei Ayanami, takes part in defence operations against successive attacks.

Unit-01 differs from the other Evangelions in several ways, exhibiting behaviour that remains unexplained at the start of the story. In certain critical situations, it can continue to act in ways that seem to go beyond the control of its pilot or NERV. These episodes gradually reveal that the EVAs are far more complex than the mechanical weapons they appear to be.

With its purple and green silhouette, its head featuring a long frontal horn, and its inseparable link with Shinji Ikari, the EVA-01 has become one of the major symbols of the Evangelion franchise. This FIGURIZMα figurine captures this iconic appearance in a 30 cm scale, featuring a deliberately theatrical pose designed to emphasise the unit’s verticality.
