Why sewing machines came back
For two entirely unrelated reasons. First: repairs. Trousers needing a hem, a zip that has gone, a torn sheet — three minutes of work instead of a trip to a tailor or, worse, throwing it away.
Second: making things. Dressmaking, patchwork, refashioning clothes. A whole generation rediscovered it as a hobby — and the machines always built for it, like Singer, found a new audience.

Which machine for whom

Two realistic points before buying
Weight and stability. A very light machine "jumps" on thick fabrics. If you intend to sew denim or curtains, weight is an advantage.

And a reality: the learning curve is shorter than you fear. Threading and the bobbin are the two things that confuse at first, and both are learned in one afternoon.
