How insect lamps work
Ultraviolet light attracts insects, and an electrified grid eliminates them as they approach. No spray, no smell, no chemicals in the air you breathe.
That makes it the preferable solution in a kitchen, restaurant, a room with a baby or with pets, where you do not want spraying.
But know what works well and what does not: UV lamps are very effective against flies, midges and night insects. Against mosquitoes performance is lower, because they are drawn mainly by carbon dioxide and body heat rather than light.
Where to place it
Away from other light sources. If the lamp runs beside a lit fitting, the insects go to the fitting. Switch it on when the other lights go off.
At a height of one and a half to two metres, away from draughts that scatter insects.
Not beside a dining table. In hospitality and kitchens, keep it away from food preparation surfaces.
And for outdoors: only models with an explicit moisture resistance rating. An indoor lamp on a terrace will not survive the first rain.
Maintenance and safety
Clean the collection tray. Residue builds up and smells. Emptying it every few weeks is enough.
The UV tube degrades. Even when it appears lit, it loses intensity over time — usually replaced after one season of continuous use.
Never with wet hands and always unplugged before cleaning. The grid is electrified.
With small children, place it out of reach or choose a model with a protective housing.
