A projection screen is not a luxury
It is the most underrated component of an installation. Many people project straight onto the wall and wonder why the image is not what they expected.
A wall has three problems: it is not truly white — it has a tint that shifts colours; it is not smooth — the plaster texture shows in the image; and it does not reflect directionally — it scatters light everywhere instead of sending it towards the viewers.
A proper screen solves all three, and the improvement is greater than a tier up in projector. It is one of the few cases where the accessory is worth more than upgrading the main device.
Which screen for which space
Manual roller. It pulls down when needed and rolls away afterwards. The practical answer for a living room that is also a living room.
Electric roller. With a remote. For permanent installations and halls, or where the screen sits high.
Fixed frame. Fabric tensioned in a frame, permanently on the wall. It gives the best flatness and therefore the cleanest image — for a dedicated screening room.
Tripod or portable. For off-site presentations, events and outdoor screening.
And the practical point: measure what size fits before ordering. A 100-inch screen needs over two metres of wall width, with no furniture or switches in the middle.
Mounts and cables
Ceiling mount. The cleanest answer for a permanent installation — the projector takes no table space and nobody moves it by accident. Check the weight limit and that the mount adjusts for tilt, because perfect alignment rarely happens first time.
An HDMI cable of the right length. This is the point forgotten in every ceiling installation. The cable has to reach from the source to the projector — and over long runs it needs to be an active cable, otherwise the picture drops out or never appears.
In practice, plan the cable route before fixing the projector — not afterwards.
