The one thing to know before buying

A turntable does not connect to just any input. The signal from the cartridge is very weak and needs a phono preamp to sound right.

There are three cases, and it is worth knowing which one you are in:

Turntable with a built-in preamp. It connects to any input — speakers, mini system, amplifier. The simple choice.

Turntable without a preamp. It needs either an amplifier with a phono input or a separate preamp. Connected to an ordinary input, the sound will be very quiet and thin — and many people think it is broken.

Turntable with built-in speakers or Bluetooth. It plays on its own, with nothing else. The easiest answer for someone who simply wants to hear their records.

The stylus is a consumable

This is the point that gets ignored and costs records. A stylus wears with hours of use — and a worn stylus does not merely sound worse, it permanently scores the vinyl.

If you are buying a used turntable or yours is years old, replace the stylus before playing good records. It costs very little against a collection.

And two practical points that extend the life of both: clean the record before playing — dust in the groove grinds the stylus — and do not lift the arm by hand if there is a cueing lever.

Why vinyl came back

It is not only sound quality — it is the ritual. You take the record out, clean it, put it on, and listen to a whole side in the order the artist intended.

It is the opposite of a random track in an app — and it is why a whole generation that never lived through vinyl rediscovered it.

And there is the obvious: a 30-centimetre sleeve is an object. It does not compare to an icon on a screen.

Frequently asked questions

Does it connect to any speakers?
Only if it has a built-in phono preamp. Otherwise it needs an amplifier with a phono input or a separate preamp.
Why does it sound so quiet?
Almost always because it was connected to an ordinary input with no phono preamp. It is not a fault.
How often does the stylus need changing?
It depends on hours of use. A worn stylus permanently damages vinyl, so do not leave it.
Do I need separate speakers?
Models with built-in speakers or Bluetooth play on their own. The rest need speakers.
How do I clean records?
With a dedicated brush before every play. Dust in the groove wears the stylus.

Check first whether it has a built-in preamp — that decides what else you will need. And change the stylus before playing your good records.
