Final Fantasy – Characters & Collectibles
The most useful thing before buying a gift: every Final Fantasy game is an entirely separate story, with its own characters.

Each game is a separate story
This confuses almost everyone buying a gift, and it is unique to this franchise.
Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XVI have no connection to one another. Different world, different story, entirely different characters.
It is not a series you follow from the beginning. It is sixteen different stories sharing only a name and certain motifs.
Why this matters: if someone loves Final Fantasy VII and you give them a figure from a different game, they will receive a character they do not know.
Always ask: "which Final Fantasy?" – by number. Players answer instantly.
What is common to all – and makes a safe gift
There are, however, two creatures that appear in almost every game in the series:
The large yellow bird you ride instead of a horse. The series' best-loved mascot.
The small white creature with the pom-pom on its head. It helps the player in every game.
In practice: if you do not know which game they love, a Chocobo or a Moogle is the safe choice. Every player of the series recognises them.
Final Fantasy VII – the most requested
Of the sixteen, one stands out commercially by a wide margin: Final Fantasy VII, from 1997.
Spiky blond hair, an enormous sword on his back. The most recognisable character in the series.
Long silver hair, an absurdly long katana. The antagonist – and he sells as well as the hero.
Tifa and Aerith, Cloud's two main companions, follow.
What is coming – and 2027 is a big year
Final Fantasy VII Revelation – spring 2027
Announced in June 2026. It is the third and final part of the trilogy remaking Final Fantasy VII.
And one significant change: it launches on every platform simultaneously – PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox. The first two parts were initially PlayStation exclusives.
2027 is a double anniversary: forty years of Final Fantasy and thirty years since Final Fantasy VII.
Final Fantasy Resonance: the series’ first HD-2D game
On 22 October 2026 Final Fantasy Resonance arrives for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PC. It is the series’ first HD-2D game, meaning pixel art inside a 3D world, as in Octopath Traveler.
It is not a sequel to any numbered Final Fantasy. It adapts the first story arc of Brave Exvius, the 2015 mobile game, and follows a hero named Rain. Combat is classic turn-based, not the ATB system of older titles.
A free demo covering the first chapter is already available. Physical editions are released for Switch, Switch 2 and PS5, while on Xbox and PC the game is digital only.
