The age – no hedging
Many parents see "a military game" and file it next to toy soldiers. It is not the same thing.
Call of Duty carries a PEGI 18 rating.
That rating restricts availability to adults only and states plainly that it is not suitable for anyone under eighteen.
The reasons the rating body itself gives are specific: graphic violence, violence against defenceless characters, the killing of innocent characters, and strong language.
It is not an exaggeration or a formality. It is an accurate description of the content.
Game or collectible? – the distinction that matters
And here is the point nobody explains, which is an important one.
18+, strictly. Not suitable for a teenager, however much they ask.
They carry no age rating. A t-shirt, a figure or a mug is simply a product.
In practice: a Call of Duty garment or figure for a fourteen-year-old is perfectly fine – they wear it or put it on a shelf.
The game itself, however, is not. If the child is asking for it and you want to give them something from the Call of Duty world without handing over an 18-rated game, the collectibles are exactly the answer.
Modern Warfare 4 – and a warning worth reading
The new game does not run on PS4 or Xbox One.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives on 23 October 2026 – and it brings a change that has never happened before.
It is the first Call of Duty to drop the previous console generation entirely. There is no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version.
If the recipient still has a PS4 – and many do – the game simply will not work. It needs a PlayStation 5, an Xbox Series X or S, a PC, or a Nintendo Switch 2.
It is being developed by Infinity Ward, the studio that created the Modern Warfare series. The campaign is set on the Korean peninsula, following a young soldier – and Captain Price returns, the franchise's most recognisable character.
DMZ also returns. It is the first time the series has appeared on a Nintendo console of this generation.
The most recent released title is Black Ops 7, from November 2025, with a story campaign, multiplayer and the Zombies mode.
Purchases inside the game
The rating body flags to parents explicitly that the game offers purchases within the game itself, through a virtual currency.
The game plays perfectly well without them. If you are buying it for a young person, though, it is worth setting up the console's parental controls – they allow limits on purchases, chat and playing time.
