Origin and background of the character

The Chocobo is one of the most recognisable creatures in the Final Fantasy saga. Featured in numerous instalments of the franchise, this iconic yellow bird often serves as a mount, travelling companion or mascot associated with exploration and adventure. Its endearing appearance, distinctive cry and recurring role have made it an iconic symbol of the Square Enix universe.

The ‘Chocobo and the Flying Ship / Chocobo and the Airship’ version is inspired by a Final Fantasy picture book written by Kazuhiko Aoki and illustrated by Toshiyuki Itahana. The story follows a brave Chocobo and the inventor Cid on an adventure involving a flying ship, a magic stone and a town under threat from monsters. This soft toy captures the spirit of this fairy tale, offering a gentler, more childlike and poetic take on the character.

This picture-book version of the Chocobo allows fans to rediscover the Final Fantasy mascot in a charming and decorative format, perfect for long-standing fans and collectors of items inspired by the illustrated worlds of Square Enix alike.
