Why structured cabling still pays

In an age of Wi-Fi the question is reasonable. The answer is practical.

Wi-Fi is shared, cable is not. Ten devices on a Wi-Fi network share the same airspace; a cable gives one device a steady connection regardless of what the others are doing.

Stability matters more than speed. In video calls, remote work, a security camera, a television streaming — the problem is not speed, it is momentary dropouts.

Power over the cable. With PoE, a camera or an access point is powered by the same cable — with no socket at the location. It is why every serious camera installation runs network cable.

And the most practical point of all: if you are renovating, run cables now. The cost is minimal while the walls are open and dramatic once they close.

Before ordering materials

Cable category. They are not all the same. For a new installation, fit a higher category than you need today — the cable will stay in the wall fifteen years, the devices will change three times.

Indoor or outdoor. Indoor cable on an external route degrades under ultraviolet within a few years. An outdoor route needs a suitable jacket.

Maximum length. Structured cabling has a limit per run. Large buildings need intermediate equipment.

Bend radius. A network cable bent sharply at a corner loses performance — and the problem shows up as random, unexplained dropouts.

And the essential point: work on a consumer unit or a new power circuit is carried out by a licensed electrician. Network materials are a different matter from electrical installation.
