Who needs them
Most desktop computers, particularly those built with a basic motherboard, have no Bluetooth. You discover this on the day you buy wireless headphones or a controller and cannot find anywhere to connect them.
The second reason is an old version. A computer with decade-old Bluetooth connects, but with dropouts, short range and no support for current audio codecs. A new adapter costs very little and settles it.
Before you buy
Check whether you already have it. Several motherboards and PCIe Wi-Fi cards include Bluetooth. If you are also considering wireless networking, a Wi-Fi card with Bluetooth covers both in one purchase.
Disable the old one. If the computer already has old Bluetooth and you add a new adapter, you often need to disable the old one in settings to avoid a conflict.
Placement. An adapter behind the case, with a metal panel in between, has shorter range than one in a front port. If the signal drops, try a different port or a USB extension.

- Open the device settings of your operating system. If there is no related option at all, it does not have it.
- Does it need installation?
- On current operating systems no — it is recognised automatically. On older ones a driver may be needed.
- Why does the audio drop on my headphones?
- Usually distance or obstacles. Try a front USB port or a short extension, so the adapter is not behind the metal case.
- Adapter or PCIe card?
- If you also want Wi-Fi, a PCIe card gives both with better antennas. If you only need Bluetooth, a USB adapter is enough.
