How it works
You plug one unit into a socket beside the router and connect it with a short network cable. You plug the second unit into any socket in the building. The two units talk to each other through the electrical wiring, and at the second socket you have a network.
Some models provide a wired port, others also broadcast Wi-Fi at the far end. Installation needs no tools and takes a few minutes.
When it is the right choice
When the obstacle is structural: a concrete slab between floors, a solid dividing wall, a basement or a storeroom elsewhere in the building. Wi-Fi is lost there and a repeater has nothing to rebroadcast.
It is also the answer when running a cable is not allowed or not worth it — in a rented home, a listed building, or when the route would need trunking through three rooms.
What to know first
Performance depends on the wiring. On new installations it performs very well. On old wiring, or when the two sockets sit on different phases of the consumer unit, speed drops noticeably or the link fails entirely.
Straight into the wall socket. Never into a power strip, especially one with surge protection — it filters exactly the signal powerline uses.

Frequently asked questions
- Does it work in every home?
- In most, but performance depends on the electrical installation. Across different phases of the consumer unit it may not connect at all.
- Can I plug it into a power strip?
- No. Always straight into a wall socket — strips, especially with surge protection, filter the signal.
- Is it faster than a repeater?
- Usually yes, when the obstacle is structural. A repeater needs a good wireless signal to rebroadcast; powerline does not depend on that.
- Why do I see no products?
