The Terminator – History, Films & Collectibles
Two films that changed cinema, and a franchise that has lived off them for decades. Here is why, what has happened since, and what is worth owning in Terminator collectibles.

1984: the film nobody saw coming
James Cameron was largely unknown. The budget was small. The lead was an Austrian bodybuilder with a heavy accent, who was given very few lines – precisely because that accent was seen as a problem.
It turned out to be inspired. A robot that says little is more frightening. And Arnold Schwarzenegger became a star.
The Terminator was a horror film dressed as science fiction: an unstoppable pursuer that does not tire, does not negotiate and never stops.
1991: Terminator 2 changed everything
Seven years later, Cameron did two things nobody expected.
First, he made the villain of the original into the protector – one of the boldest reversals in the history of sequels.
Second, he created the T-1000: a robot of liquid metal that changed shape. The effects were groundbreaking, and showed what cinema could now do with a computer.
Why this matters here: almost all the collectible merchandise comes from those two films. They are the images that stayed.
What followed
More films came, but none repeated the success of the first two. Dark Fate in 2019 was the most recent on the big screen.
In 2024 Netflix released Terminator Zero, an anime series that moved the story to Tokyo and stepped away from the Connors. It drew strong reviews – but concluded after one season. Its creator put it plainly: the reception was tremendous, but not enough people watched.

The endoskeleton: a design that outgrew the films
The metal skull with red eyes is one of very few designs in cinema history that works entirely on its own.
