A record unlikely to fall
The Simpsons began in 1989. It is the longest-running scripted primetime series in American television history – and the longest-running animated series and sitcom.
In April 2025 the show was renewed for four more seasons – through the fortieth, which runs to 2029.
By the end of it, there will be 846 episodes.
And one thing worth saying: there is no proper finale planned. The makers have said that whenever it does end, it will be an episode like any other.
Commercially this matters: thirty-seven years means a forty-year-old grew up with the show – and their children are watching it now. Not a reboot, not a new version: the same series.
What is coming
Season 38 – premiering 27 September 2026
The thirty-eighth season starts in late September, in its long-standing Sunday slot.
In the meantime, exclusive episodes arrived on Disney+ through the summer of 2026 – among them "Yellow Mirror", released at the end of August.
And a return to cinemas
A second film has been confirmed for 2027 – twenty years after the first, which took $536 million in 2007.
Plot details have not been announced. The poster shows only Homer with a donut, and the suggestion that he is back for a second round.
Why the designs work on anything
There is a reason Simpsons products work equally well on a keyring and a poster, where other shows do not.
The characters are pure silhouette. The yellow skin, the overbite, Marge's blue tower of hair, Bart's spiked head.
They are recognisable from across a room, at any size. They do not need detail in order to read.
And there is a second level: the objects of Springfield stand on their own.
With coloured sprinkles. Recognisable with no character at all.
Springfield's fictional beer – these are adult products.
And the town's other signs and logos.
Who is who
The father. The most requested in merchandise, by a wide margin.
The son, with the spiked head and the red shirt.
The mother, with the tall blue tower of hair.
The clever daughter with the saxophone, and the baby with the dummy.
Around them sits a vast supporting cast – Krusty, Mr Burns, Ned Flanders – who have followings of their own in collectibles.
