Nightmare Before Christmas – History & Collectibles

A film of seventy-six minutes that has been selling merchandise for thirty-three years – and twice every year. Here is why, who actually made it, and what is worth collecting.

Techbox, Thessaloniki

Who actually made it

Almost everyone calls it "the Tim Burton film". Tim Burton did not direct it.

It was directed by Henry Selick. Tim Burton wrote the original poem, created the characters and served as producer – but he was working on other films throughout the shoot.

It is one of the most persistent misattributions in cinema history – and Selick has commented on it publicly more than once.

The film is stop-motion: small puppets moved frame by frame. The music is by Danny Elfman, who also sings Jack's songs himself.

It runs just one hour and sixteen minutes – among the shortest films ever to have such lasting cultural influence.

Two holidays, one film

Here is the genuinely unusual part, and it matters commercially.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is simultaneously a Halloween film and a Christmas film. It is not one or the other – it is both, equally.

In practice that means demand begins in September and runs through to January. Four months of continuous peak – something no other seasonal theme has.

It is also why the film returns regularly to cinemas each autumn. Its thirtieth-anniversary re-release passed ten million dollars in North America alone – for a 1993 film.

The characters

Jack Skellington

The "Pumpkin King". White skull, pinstripe suit. The most recognisable design – it works with no explanation at all.

Sally

The ragdoll with stitched limbs and red hair. The second most commercial character.

Oogie Boogie

The villain – a sack full of insects. He has a devoted following of his own.

Zero

Jack's ghost dog, with the glowing nose.

What is coming in 2026

There is no film sequel – and probably never will be. Tim Burton has publicly turned the idea down, saying he wants the film left as it is.

The continuation has instead arrived in print:

  • "The Shiver of Christmas Town" – a comic series that began in January 2026, with a collected edition in September.
  • "The Hour of the Pumpkin Queen" – a 240-page graphic novel, 9 September 2026, centred on Sally.

Both land just before Halloween – the market leaves nothing to chance.

What is worth collecting

  • Figures & statues: Jack dominates, with Sally second.
  • Funko POP: the whole cast, with many seasonal variants.
  • Decor: ornaments, lamps and homeware – they work for both Halloween and Christmas.
  • Apparel: t-shirts and hoodies – Jack's skull is a timeless design.
  • Gifts: mugs, keyrings, jewellery, posters.

Frequently asked questions

Did Tim Burton direct the film?
No. It was directed by Henry Selick. Tim Burton wrote the original poem, created the characters and produced it – but he was working on other films during the shoot. It is one of cinema's most persistent misattributions.
Is it a Halloween film or a Christmas film?
Both – and that is exactly what makes it unique. Demand for its merchandise begins in September and runs through to January.
Will there be a second film?
Probably not. Tim Burton has publicly said he does not want a sequel. The story does continue in comics and graphic novels, though – two new ones arrive during 2026.
Is it suitable for children?
The film is aimed at a broad audience, but its aesthetic is dark and Oogie Boogie frightens young children. It suits roughly seven and up.
