Silent Hill – From the 1999 fog to Townfall

Updated: · Techbox, Thessaloniki

Konami’s series that made horror psychological rather than spectacular. After years of silence it has come back strongly: the Silent Hill 2 remake in 2024, Silent Hill f in 2025 and, on 24 September 2026, Silent Hill: Townfall. Here is the history, the games in order, the films and what is worth collecting.

What makes Silent Hill different

The first Silent Hill arrived in 1999 on PlayStation. Unlike the horror games of its time, it relied not on action but on atmosphere: fog that hides everything, a radio that crackles when something approaches, and Akira Yamaoka’s music.

The core idea of the series is that the town reflects the mind of whoever enters it. The monsters are not random: they are symbols of each hero’s guilt and fears. That is why their designs have stayed so recognisable for decades.

The games in order

1999 – Silent Hill · 2001 – Silent Hill 2 · 2003 – Silent Hill 3 · 2004 – Silent Hill 4: The Room · 2007 – Origins · 2008 – Homecoming · 2009 – Shattered Memories · 2012 – Downpour · 2024 – Silent Hill 2 (remake) · 2025 – Silent Hill f · 2026 – Silent Hill: Townfall.

Between 2012 and 2024 the series essentially went quiet. The only sign of life was 2014’s P.T., an interactive teaser for a Silent Hills that was cancelled and became a legend.

Silent Hill 2 and Pyramid Head

Silent Hill 2 is regarded as one of the best horror games ever made. James Sunderland comes to the town because he receives a letter from his wife, who has been dead for three years.

This game gave us Pyramid Head, the series’ most recognisable creature and the most popular subject in its collectibles. The 2024 remake by Bloober Team brought the story to a new generation of players.

The new era: Silent Hill f and Townfall

Silent Hill f (September 2025) moved the series to 1960s Japan for the first time, following schoolgirl Hinako Shimizu. It sold over a million copies on its first day, the fastest-selling game in the series.

Silent Hill: Townfall arrives on 24 September 2026 for PS5 and PC. It is the first in the series played in first person, set in St. Amelia, a fictional Scottish fishing village, in 1996. The hero, Simon Ordell, tracks monsters with a handheld CRT television. It is developed by Scottish studio Screen Burn Interactive with Annapurna Interactive.

A remake of the first Silent Hill by Bloober Team is also in development, with no date yet.

Which console?Townfall is out only on PS5 and PC. Silent Hill f and the Silent Hill 2 remake are available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. All are rated PEGI 18.

The films

The series has three feature films: Silent Hill in 2006, directed by Christophe Gans, Silent Hill: Revelation in 2012, and Return to Silent Hill, with which Gans came back to the series in early 2026 by adapting the story of Silent Hill 2.

What to collect

The most sought-after pieces are statues of Pyramid Head and the nurses, above all from Gecco, which has produced the most detailed versions. Good Smile offers Nendoroids and static figures, while Kotobukiya and Numskull cover smaller scales and everyday items.

For a more affordable gift there are Funko POP, keychains featuring Robbie the Rabbit, the pink bunny from Silent Hill 3, and of course the games themselves on disc. Everything is gathered on the Silent Hill page →.
