Born from a failure
Before Mickey, Walt Disney had created a successful character: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
In 1928, during a negotiation in New York, he discovered that he did not own him. The rights belonged to his distributor, who had already hired away most of his animators.
On the train home, Walt needed a new character, fast. Mickey Mouse was not the product of inspiration – he was the product of necessity. And he became the most recognisable animated character in history.
Steamboat Willie was a technical achievement
Steamboat Willie premiered on 18 November 1928. It is usually described as "the first cartoon with sound". It was not.
It was the first cartoon in which the sound matched the action exactly – every whistle, every knock, every note synchronised to the frame.
Until then, sound in cartoons was music laid over the top. Here, Mickey played the music with whatever was in front of him. Audiences had seen nothing like it.
It was the moment animation stopped being a filler act before the feature and became an art form with its own reason to exist.
Walt Disney voiced him himself
For nineteen years, from 1928 to 1947, Mickey's voice was Walt Disney's own.
It was not a design decision – early on there was no money for an actor. But it stayed, because nobody else did it quite the same way.
The company's founder was literally the voice of its mascot. Very few companies anywhere have that relationship with their symbol.
The three circles
Mickey's design is three circles: a head and two ears.
It is one of the most efficient logos ever made, for practical reasons:
- It draws in two seconds. A three-year-old recognises it.
- It works at any size – from a keyring to a building.
- The ears stay round from every angle the character is drawn at. That is a design decision, not an oversight.
Commercially: that is why the ear shape sells on its own, with no face at all. Headbands, jewellery, accessories – buyers know what it is before reading the title.
Steamboat Willie entered the public domain
On 1 January 2024, the original version of Mickey – the Steamboat Willie one – entered the public domain in the United States, after 95 years.
It applies only to that 1928 version: black and white, no gloves, with the different eyes.
The modern Mickey – white gloves, red shorts, large eyes – remains fully protected. And Disney's trademark applies regardless of copyright.
