The history: the Disney film that did not look like Disney
In 2002 Disney released a film that resembled nothing else in its catalogue. No princess, no castle, no magic. Instead: a single-parent family in Hawaii struggling to stay together, and an alien experiment looking for somewhere to hide.
Chris Sanders created Stitch and voiced him – and still does. The film was made with watercolour backgrounds, a technique Disney had not used since Dumbo in 1941.
Why it has lasted twenty years: Stitch is not cute in the conventional way. He is disruptive, destructive and difficult – and that is exactly why children recognise him. He is the one Disney character who earns affection without becoming a well-behaved child.

The 2025 film and the 2028 sequel
On 23 May 2025 Disney released the live-action version, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp. It outperformed every projection.
- Over $1.33 billion worldwide – the fourth highest-grossing film of 2025.
- A Memorial Day opening record: $182 million across four days, beating Top Gun: Maverick.
- The first live-action/animation hybrid to pass one billion dollars.
- The cast: Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Agudong as Nani, Kaipo Dudoit as David, Zach Galifianakis as Jumba, Billy Magnussen as Pleakley – with Chris Sanders again voicing Stitch.
The sequel already has a date: 26 May 2028. And it has something the first did not – Chris Sanders, the man who created Stitch in 2002, is writing it and directing it himself.
What 626 means
Stitch is Experiment 626 – Dr. Jumba's 626th genetic experiment. Fans turned it into a celebration: 26 June is 626 Day, the unofficial "Stitch Day", which Disney now marks officially with announcements and releases.
