The hero is thirty-two – and not by accident
Almost every action series has a fifteen-year-old lead. Not this one, and it is the most interesting thing about it.
Kafka Hibino is thirty-two years old. He dreamed of joining the Defence Force that fights the monsters. He failed.
So he ended up in the job nobody wants: clearing away the corpses of the monsters after the real heroes have killed them. He is the man who cleans up after everyone else.
Until he accidentally gains the power to become a monster himself – and joins the Defence Force as its oldest recruit, hiding what he is.
Why this matters commercially: it is the anime for people who have outgrown anime about teenagers.
If someone says "I am tired of series about fifteen-year-olds saving the world", this is the answer. The protagonist has made mistakes, lost years, and gets a second chance at thirty-two.

The story has ended – and season three is the finale
The manga concluded in July 2025 – one hundred and twenty-nine chapters, sixteen volumes, over nineteen million copies in circulation.
And the third anime season was announced explicitly as the "Final Chapter" – it will close the story, with no loose ends.
The first two seasons aired in 2024 and 2025, twenty-three episodes in total. The third is in production.
No date has been announced. You will find projections for late 2026 or early 2027, but these are estimates, not announcements.
In the meantime a short slice-of-life series featuring one of the captains is expected, as a bridge.
For collecting this is an advantage: with the story complete, the character designs are final. No new version is coming to make today's figure the outdated one.
What age it is for
It is an action series with monsters: there are battles, destruction and some blood, but it does not go to the extremes of other well-known series.
It suits thirteen and up. It is milder than Attack on Titan, to which it is often compared.
If someone loves Godzilla-style monsters, this is the anime version of the same genre – "kaiju" literally means "strange beast" in Japanese.
