Hatsune Miku – What She Is, History & Collectibles
She is not a film character. She is software – and her songs are written by thousands of strangers. Here is exactly what she is, why she has so many fans, and what is worth buying.

What she actually is
On 31 August 2007, a small software company in Sapporo, Japan – Crypton Future Media – released a voice synthesis program.
To make it more appealing, they gave it a face: a girl with turquoise hair, drawn by the illustrator KEI. They named her Hatsune Miku – "the first sound of the future".
The product was the software. The character was merely the packaging. And within a few years, the character became bigger than the product.
Who writes her songs
This is the genuinely unusual part, and the reason Miku resembles no other franchise.
No company writes her songs. Her fans do – tens of thousands of tracks, by thousands of people around the world, over nearly twenty years.
Someone buys the software, writes a song, uploads it. If people like it, it spreads. Some of those songs have hundreds of millions of plays.
Miku is not a singer with a repertoire. She is a tool that became a community. Which is why her fans feel she belongs to them – because, quite literally, they make her themselves.
The concerts
Miku plays live concerts to full arenas. She appears as a projection on stage, with a real band playing beneath her.
The largest event is Magical Mirai, held every summer since 2013. 2026 marks the fourteenth year, across three cities – Hamamatsu, Osaka and Tokyo – under the theme "Sonare of the Lake".
Magical Mirai is not only a concert: it includes an exhibition devoted to the creative community around Miku.
The annual variants
This is the key to understanding her collector value:
Started in 2010, alongside the Sapporo Snow Festival. A new outfit each year, chosen through a public design contest. 2026 was the seventeenth year.
A new outfit and key visual each year, from a different artist – with matching figures.
Why this matters commercially: every year brings new versions of the same character. The collector who bought last year buys again this year. Very few franchises have such a natural cycle of repeat purchase.
She is not alone
Crypton created other voices too, who appear alongside her at the concerts:
- Kagamine Rin & Len – the twins, with yellow as their signature colour.
- Megurine Luka – pink hair, a bilingual voice.
- MEIKO and KAITO – the two older voices, predating Miku.
They all have their own merchandise, but Miku dominates by a wide margin.
What is worth collecting
- Nendoroid: the small figures with interchangeable faces – Miku is among the line's earliest and most popular characters.
- Scale figures: detailed statues, often with a base and a distinctive pose.
- Snow Miku editions: one per year – collectible by their very nature.
- Plush & accessories: keyrings, bags, pins.
- Apparel & posters: in her signature turquoise palette.
