Gabby's Dollhouse – Guide, Characters & Toys

A series that shows the toy in every episode – which is exactly why children ask for it. Here is who each cat is, why the series works, and what is worth choosing.

Techbox, Thessaloniki

What the series is

Gabby's Dollhouse premiered on Netflix in January 2021. It was created by Traci Paige Johnson and Jennifer Twomey – the same pair behind Blue's Clues, one of the most successful preschool series ever made.

Its format is unusual: it combines live action and animation. Gabby appears in front of the camera as herself – and then shrinks and steps inside the dollhouse, where everything becomes animated.

Every episode opens with a surprise box being unboxed. That is not incidental – it is structural, built on something children already love to watch.

Who each cat is

Every cat has her own room and her own speciality – which is precisely what makes the playsets make sense:

Pandy Paws

The pink panda-cat, Gabby's best friend.

Cakey Cat

The cupcake cat who bakes. Her room is the kitchen.

MerCat

The mermaid cat – she lives in the water, in the bathroom.

Kitty Fairy

The winged fairy who tends the garden.

CatRat

Half cat, half mouse – the group's engineer.

DJ Catnip & Baby Box

The DJ who handles the music, and the baby box.

Why it works so well

Its creators came from Blue's Clues, and it shows: the series is built so the child participates rather than simply watches. Gabby speaks to the camera, asks questions, and waits for an answer.

And commercially: very few series have such a direct relationship with a physical product. The dollhouse is not merchandise bolted on afterwards – it is the centre of every episode. The child sees it, understands how it is played with, and asks for it.

The film

In autumn 2025, Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie reached cinemas – DreamWorks Animation's fiftieth feature film, and their first to combine live action with animation.

In it, Gabby travels with Grandma Gigi to "Cat Francisco", and the dollhouse ends up in the hands of an eccentric woman. The film passed $80 million worldwide.

What to choose

  • The dollhouse: the centrepiece toy – large, with rooms and furniture.
  • Room sets: smaller and cheaper, they add to the main house.
  • Figures: the Gabby Cats individually, to complete a collection.
  • Plush: for younger ages, with no small parts.
  • School gear & apparel: for nursery and the early school years.

Frequently asked questions

What age is Gabby's Dollhouse for?
For preschool children, roughly 3 to 6 years old. The plush suit younger ages too, while sets with small parts carry an age marking on the box.
Who are the Gabby Cats?
The cats who live inside the dollhouse. Each has her own room and speciality: Cakey bakes, MerCat lives in the water, Kitty Fairy tends the garden, CatRat is the engineer.
Is there a film?
Yes, released in autumn 2025 – DreamWorks' fiftieth feature. It combines live action and animation, just as the series does.
Does the child need to have watched the series?
Not necessarily. The dollhouse and figures work as toys on their own. But a child who has watched the series knows exactly how to play with them – and that changes a great deal.
