Why it stood apart
In 2013 Disney released a film that looked much like its predecessors – and then did something it had never done.
At the end, the "act of true love" that saves the heroine is not a romantic kiss. It is the bond between two sisters. The prince turns out to be the villain, and the resolution comes from Anna and Elsa.
Why this matters commercially: it is exactly why Frozen has two heroines rather than one. Children pick a side – some want Elsa, some want Anna – and families with two daughters buy both. Few franchises have that dynamic.
Let It Go won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2014, and became one of the most recognisable pieces of music of the decade.

Disney has confirmed that Frozen 4 is also in development. As Lee explained: Frozen 2 left so many questions that two films will be needed to answer them – one story told across two parts.
Eight years separate Frozen 2 from Frozen 3. Studio dates move – we update this guide whenever something changes officially.
