Disney Princess – Characters, History & Collectibles

Thirteen princesses drawn from sixty years of films – and two very famous ones who are not part of it. Here is who they are, each one's colour, and what is worth buying in Disney Princess products.

Who is officially a Disney Princess

The line comprises thirteen characters, spanning 1937 to the present:

  • Snow White (1937) – the first
  • Cinderella (1950)
  • Aurora (1959)
  • Ariel (1989)
  • Belle (1991)
  • Jasmine (1992)
  • Pocahontas (1995)
  • Mulan (1998)
  • Tiana (2009)
  • Rapunzel (2010)
  • Merida (2012)
  • Moana (2016)
  • Raya (2021)

Why Elsa is not a Disney Princess

This is the most common confusion, and it matters practically when buying a gift.

Elsa and Anna are not part of the Disney Princess line. Frozen is a separate merchandise line – so successful that Disney kept it independent.

The same applies to Tinker Bell, who belongs to Disney Fairies.

What this means for you: a "Disney Princess" set will not contain Elsa. If the child wants Elsa, look under Frozen – different products, different packaging.

Each princess's colour

Every princess has her own colour, and children know them very well. It is the most useful tool when you cannot remember a name:

Ariel
Green (the tail)
Belle
Yellow
Cinderella
Light blue
Rapunzel
Purple
Jasmine
Turquoise
Tiana
Green
Moana
Orange
Snow White
Red & yellow

If a child says "I want the purple one", they mean Rapunzel. "The green one with the tail" is Ariel.

How the line began

Something few people know: "Disney Princess" did not exist in the films. It is a merchandise line created around 2000.

Andy Mooney, a Disney executive, noticed at an ice show that girls were wearing homemade princess costumes. The company sold none. He proposed bringing together characters from sixty years of separate films into a single line.

It became one of the most profitable merchandise lines in history – and the reason characters half a century apart now appear together in the same box.

What to choose
