Who Deadpool is
Wade Wilson was a mercenary with terminal cancer. He accepted an experimental programme that cured him – and permanently disfigured him.
He gained rapid healing: he does not die. Whatever happens to him, he recovers.
The trait that sets him apart from every other hero: he knows he is a fictional character. He speaks directly to the audience, comments on the film itself, refers to actors and contracts. Audiences love him for precisely that.
The three films
- Deadpool (2016) – the first, which proved an adults-only superhero film could work.
- Deadpool 2 (2018).
- Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) – with Hugh Jackman, the film that brought the character into the Marvel Studios universe.
Ryan Reynolds plays him in all three, and co-writes.
Avengers: Doomsday – what is actually known
Avengers: Doomsday is released on 18 December 2026.
Whether Deadpool appears in it is uncertain, and worth saying honestly: the sources disagree with each other.
What is certain: Reynolds was not included in the official cast announcement. Marvel has not confirmed his involvement.
What happened recently: at Comic-Con in July 2026, Reynolds appeared from within the audience, dressed as Deadpool – but in a grey and black suit from the comics, not the classic red. He joked around and asked when filming started. He was told the film was already finished.
Reynolds himself has said repeatedly that the character works better in isolation, rather than inside a superhero team.

Deadpool is among Marvel's most commercial characters in adult merchandise – and the reason is the design.
The red and black mask with two large white eyes is instantly recognisable, works at any size, and needs no explanation whatsoever.
