Back to the Future – DeLorean & Collectibles

The car outsells every character. But be careful – it is not the same in every film.

Which DeLorean – the question that matters

In very few films does the object outshine the actors. Here it does: the silver DeLorean is the most recognisable element of the entire trilogy.

And this is where the mistake hides: the car changes in every film. A collector knows exactly which one they want:

FIRST FILMThe classic DeLorean, as it left the factory.
SECOND FILMWith the flight conversion – the wheels fold flat. It flies.
THIRD FILMWith railway wheels, for the tracks of the Old West.

Before buying a model, ask "from which film?".

There is something else commercially: the DeLorean also sells to people who love cars, regardless of the films. It is a real car model with a distinctive design – a double audience.

The three films – three entirely different eras

The first film opened on 3 July 1985, directed by Robert Zemeckis with Steven Spielberg as executive producer. It passed $380 million and won an Oscar.

1st – to 1955

Marty goes back in time and meets his parents as teenagers.

2nd – to the future

Hoverboards, self-lacing shoes, flying cars.

3rd – to the Old West

In 1885, with horses, trains and cowboys.

The leads: Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as the eccentric Doc Brown – with the unruly white hair.

The objects that stand on their own

Beyond the car, the trilogy has objects recognisable with no character at all:

The flux capacitor

The three-pronged shape that flashes. It works on a t-shirt by itself.

The hoverboard

Pink, from the second film. One of the most requested items.

The clock tower

With the lightning bolt – the defining image of the first film.

Is a fourth film coming? – no

You will see headlines implying otherwise. They are wrong.

The director and the writer have actively prevented a fourth film for years. And Michael J. Fox has said he would not return.

When you see headlines about a "new film", they usually refer to the documentary released in March 2026 about the making of the musical.

What is actually happening is the musical. It ran in London until April 2026, continues on tour, and for the first time features a flying DeLorean on stage.

And for collecting this matters: a completed trilogy with no continuation means the merchandise does not go stale. There is no new version coming to make today's piece look outdated.

What to choose

  • DeLorean models: the leading category – in various scales. Check which film.
  • Funko POP: Marty, Doc, Biff – and the car itself.
  • Replicas: flux capacitor and other props.
  • Apparel: with the logo or the flux capacitor – they work with no character.
  • Gifts: mugs, posters, lamps, keyrings.

Frequently asked questions

Which DeLorean should I choose?
It depends on the film. In the first it is the classic, in the second it has the flight conversion, and in the third it has railway wheels. Ask "from which film?" before buying.
What sells the most?
The DeLorean models, by a margin – more than any character. And they also sell to car enthusiasts who are not especially interested in the films.
Is a fourth film coming?
No. The director and writer have actively prevented it, and Michael J. Fox has said he would not return. Headlines about a "new film" usually refer to the 2026 documentary about the musical.
Is there anything new?
The musical, which continues on tour and now features a flying DeLorean on stage for the first time. And a documentary about its making, with Michael J. Fox.
What age is it for?
It is mild and family-friendly – it suits eight and up. One of the few films three generations can watch together comfortably.
