AC/DC – Angus, Back in Black and fifty years of rock
Updated: · Techbox, Thessaloniki
Two brothers from Sydney, a lightning bolt in the logo and a guitarist in a school uniform. The story of AC/DC, the albums that made them legends and what makes a good gift for a rock fan.
How it began
AC/DC were founded in Sydney in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Malcolm was the rhythm guitarist and the backbone of the sound, Angus the lead guitarist and the face of the band.
Their first great singer was Bon Scott, with whom they wrote 1979’s "Highway to Hell".
From loss to Back in Black
In February 1980 Bon Scott died. A few months later, with new singer Brian Johnson, the band released "Back in Black", with an all-black cover in his memory. It became one of the best-selling albums of all time.
Malcolm Young died in 2017 and his place passed to his nephew, Stevie Young. The 2020 album "Power Up" is dedicated to him.
Angus and the school uniform
Angus Young has played on stage in a school uniform since the band’s earliest years, and his image with the Gibson SG, bent into the "duck walk", is one of the most recognisable in rock.
That is why most AC/DC collectibles are figures of Angus: in the uniform, the cap and with the SG.
What to give a fan
The lightning-bolt logo is everywhere, which makes AC/DC one of the easiest gifts. T-shirts with the "Back in Black" and "Highway to Hell" artwork, caps, mugs and playing cards are choices every generation recognises instantly.
For collectors there are Angus figures from Knucklebonz and Funko.
