Background and career – Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson began his career at a very young age with the Jackson 5 before embarking on a solo career that reached new heights with *Off the Wall* in 1979. His album *Thriller*, released in 1982, became his first number one album in the United States and featured hits such as ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Beat It’ and ‘Thriller’.

At the 1984 Grammy Awards, Michael Jackson won eight awards in a single evening, notably for *Thriller*, *Beat It* and *Billie Jean*. In total, the Recording Academy awarded him 13 Grammy Awards over the course of his career, as well as a Grammy Legend Award in 1993 and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.
