Character background and universe (Lore)

Joker is the main protagonist of Persona 5 and its expanded version, Persona 5 Royal. After being unjustly sentenced to a period of probation, he is sent to Tokyo, where he enrols at Shujin Academy and stays at Café Leblanc.

He soon discovers the existence of the Metaverse, a parallel world shaped by the corrupt desires of certain individuals. Together with several of his classmates, he forms the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a group that breaks into their targets’ Palaces to symbolically steal their ‘treasures’ and bring about a change of heart.

Joker possesses the power of the Wild Card, which allows him to use several different Personas. His iconic Persona is Arsène, directly inspired by the gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, which reinforces the themes of rebellion, freedom and defiance of authority present throughout the game.

Charismatic and determined, Joker has become one of the most recognisable characters in the Persona franchise. His mask, long black coat and role as leader of the Phantom Thieves make him a figure immediately associated with the elegant and rebellious aesthetic of Persona 5 Royal.
