Three types, three uses
Desk speakers. Small, powered from a USB port with a 3.5 mm or USB connection. They need no wall socket and take no space. They cover video, background music and conference calls.
2.1 sets with a subwoofer. Two satellites and a subwoofer on the floor. The difference in bass is large — for films and games in a room it is a different experience from a pair of small speakers.
Portable Bluetooth. Battery powered, often with water protection, for the beach, the balcony and trips. W-King and Tronsmart operate in this space.
What to check
How it connects. 3.5 mm speakers work with anything that has a headphone output. USB units take power and signal from the same port, which is the tidiest option at a desk. Bluetooth frees you from cables but needs charging.
Watts do not tell the truth. Advertised figures are often theoretical. A more reliable guide is driver size and whether there is a separate subwoofer.
Water resistance. If the speaker will go outdoors, look for an explicit rating — not merely "rugged".
