Steel Ball Run premiered on Netflix in March 2026 with a single episode.
From 25 September 2026, eleven new episodes begin, released weekly.
The premise: in 1890, a four-thousand-mile horse race from San Diego to New York, with a fifty-million-dollar prize.
The leads are Johnny Joestar – a former jockey left paralysed – and Gyro Zeppeli, an outlaw with mysterious abilities.
Important if you have never watched JoJo: Steel Ball Run is set in a separate universe from the earlier parts. You can start here, with no prior knowledge at all.
The "parts" – and why they confuse people
JoJo is not one continuous story. It is divided into parts, and each part has its own protagonist, in its own era.
What links them is the Joestar family: each hero is a descendant of the last, and all of them carry a nickname that sounds like "JoJo".
For a gift: ask which part. If you do not know, Jotaro – in the black cap and long coat – is the safest choice. He is the most recognisable character in the entire series.
What Stands are
The series' power system, and one of the most original ever written.
A Stand is an entity that stands beside the character and fights on their behalf. Only people who have Stands of their own can see them.
Every Stand has an entirely different ability – often a very strange one. Fights are won by ingenuity, not raw force.
The most famous is Star Platinum, Jotaro's Stand – and among the most requested in figures.
Why JoJo figures look different
If you have seen JoJo figures next to other anime figures, you will have noticed: the poses are dramatic, almost balletic.
It is not accidental. The creator, Hirohiko Araki, draws openly on fashion magazines and sculpture. His characters stand the way models do in a shoot.
Commercially: this is why JoJo figures are often bought as design objects – even by people who have never watched the series. They sit on a shelf like a small sculpture.
