Dandadan has bold colours, comedy and teenage leads. It looks like a cheerful anime for young people.
It is not. It contains crude adult humour, sexual innuendo and frightening imagery. It is aimed at older teenagers and adults.
The products – figures, t-shirts – are of course innocent. But if you are thinking of recommending it to a child, watch an episode first.
What Dandadan is
The premise is among the cleverest ever written for an anime, and it takes ten seconds to explain:
Two classmates disagree. Momo believes in ghosts but not aliens. Okarun believes in aliens but not ghosts.
They make a bet. Each sets out to prove the other wrong. And they discover that both of them are right.
The manga began in April 2021, by Yukinobu Tatsu – this year marks five years.
The anime, from studio Science SARU, stood out immediately for its visual daring: intense colour, unusual angles, action sequences that look like nothing else.
Who is who
The lead. She believes in ghosts – forceful and fearless.
The co-lead. He believes in aliens – shy and nerdy.
The small ghost. She has become the series' unofficial mascot.
Commercially: Turbo Granny sells as an object in her own right. Her design is distinctive enough to catch the eye even of someone who has never seen the series.
Where it stands and what is next
Two seasons have aired: the first in October 2024, the second in the summer of 2025.
Season three – 2027. Officially confirmed, with the same studio. No exact date has been announced yet.
It will cover the longest and most ambitious arc in the entire manga.
In the meantime, something unprecedented is happening this year: the first ever Dandadan stage play runs in August and September 2026 in Tokyo and Osaka.
And the manga continues – it has already passed two hundred and thirty chapters.
