Which console suits whom, disc or digital, what the PEGI rating means and which accessories you actually need. The guide to buying right the first time.
Which console?
The PS5 has the most exclusive action and adventure games, the Nintendo Switch 2 plays both on the TV and in the hand with Nintendo’s games, and the Xbox Series is ideal for Game Pass users. All are under consoles, along with handheld gaming PCs such as the Steam Deck.
The most important question before buying is simple: which games do they want to play? Each platform’s exclusives are usually the real reason for the choice.
Disc or digital?
The PS5 Digital editions and the Xbox Series S have no disc drive: they play digital games only. If you want to buy physical copies, lend them or resell them, you need a model with a disc drive. Every disc title is under video games, organised by console.
The PEGI rating
Every game shows a PEGI number on its cover (3, 7, 12, 16 or 18) indicating the minimum age it is suitable for. If you are buying a gift for a child, it is the first thing to check.
The accessories worth having
A second controller for playing with friends, a charging dock, a headset, and almost certainly extra storage within the first year. All under console accessories.
For long sessions, a proper chair makes a difference: see gaming furniture. And for the nostalgic, there are retro games and arcade.
