Character background and lore

Monkey D. Luffy grew up in the village of Fuchsia, located in the East Blue region. During his childhood, he befriended the pirate Shanks the Red, whose crew regularly used the village as a resting place. Fascinated by their freedom and adventures, Luffy decided at a very early age that he too would become a pirate.

One day, he discovers a strange fruit kept in a chest belonging to Shanks’s crew. Without knowing its true nature, he eats it whole despite its particularly awful taste. He then realises that he has just absorbed the powers of a Devil Fruit, known at the time as the Gomu Gomu no Mi.

This fruit transforms his body into an elastic substance similar to rubber. Luffy can now stretch his arms, legs and various parts of his body, absorb certain impacts and develop particularly unpredictable fighting techniques. On the downside, like all Devil Fruit users, he loses the ability to swim.

Much later, it is revealed that the fruit has a far greater significance than previously thought. 

Shortly after gaining his powers, Luffy is attacked by a sea monster. Shanks saves his life at the cost of his left arm, then entrusts him with his famous straw hat, asking him to return it once he has become a great pirate. This event strengthens Luffy’s determination to set sail.

Years later, he forms the Straw Hat Crew and sets off in search of One Piece, the legendary treasure left behind by Gol D. Roger. His goal is to become the Pirate King, a title he associates above all with absolute freedom.

This figurine therefore captures the precise moment when Luffy’s destiny takes a turn: an innocent and impulsive gesture that grants him his powers, but also places him at the centre of one of the greatest mysteries in the One Piece universe.
