Character background and universe (Lore)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica follows several schoolgirls as they are confronted with a world of magic, witches and contracts with irreversible consequences. Behind its initially bright aesthetic, the series develops a dark narrative centred on sacrifice, destiny and the price one must pay to obtain extraordinary power.

Kyubey is a small creature belonging to an alien species known asthe Incubators. He approaches young girls capable of becoming magical girls and offers to grant them one of their wishes. In exchange, they must accept a contract and fight witches.

His cute appearance and calm demeanour mean he easily inspires trust. However, Kyubey is incapable of understanding human emotions in the same way as the characters he recruits. He analyses events according to a cold, utilitarian logic, without fully grasping the suffering caused by his decisions.

When a young girl accepts his deal, her soul is transferred into a Soul Gem, which becomes the source of her powers. The physical body then becomes nothing more than a remotely controlled shell. Kyubey generally only reveals this information once the contract has been concluded, as he does not consider this omission to be a lie.

Magical girls gradually accumulate despair and impurities in their Soul Gems. When the Soul Gem becomes entirely corrupted, it transforms into a Grief Seed and the girl herself becomes a witch. The energy released during this process is precisely what the Incubators seek to harvest.

Kyubey justifies this system by citing the need to produce sufficient energy to combat entropy and prolong the existence of the universe. In his view, the sacrifice of a limited number of human beings is acceptable when it helps to preserve an incomparably greater number of lives.

In the film *Rebellion*, originally released in Japan in 2013, Kyubey once again intervenes in the destinies of Madoka Kaname and Homura Akemi. The plot directly follows on from the events of the series and leads the characters towards a new transformation of their reality. The film is presented as the third cinematic instalment in the franchise and as an entirely new story following on from the first two recapitulative feature films.

This Fluffy Puffy figurine perfectly captures Kyubey’s central paradox: a creature that appears soft and harmless, yet whose calm demeanour, logic and objectives conceal one of the cruelest mechanisms in the Madoka Magica universe.
