Origin and character lore

Final Fantasy VII is set in a world dominated by the Shinra Corporation, a massive industrial organisation that extracts the planet’s life energy, known as Mako. The game follows a group of resistance fighters attempting to protect the planet whilst confronting a threat linked to the experiments conducted by Shinra.

Cloud Strife is a former Shinra foot soldier turned mercenary. Armed with his imposing Mako-sword, he joins the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE to take part in an operation against Midgar’s Mako reactors. His past, his fragmented memories and his connection to Sephiroth play a central role in the story.

Sephiroth was once regarded as the greatest member of SOLDIER, Shinra’s elite unit. After discovering the circumstances of his creation and the scientific experiments surrounding his origins, he descends into madness and turns against humanity.

The Nibelheim incident marks a major turning point in both characters’ journeys. During a mission in Cloud’s hometown, Sephiroth uncovers documents relating to the Jenova project. Convinced that he is the heir to an ancient race, he sets the village alight and massacres several of its inhabitants.

Cloud then attempts to confront him in the reactor at Mount Nibel. This confrontation becomes one of the defining moments of *Final Fantasy VII*, even though Cloud’s memories initially present an incomplete and distorted version of it.

This Console Heroes diorama pays tribute to this tragic episode by placing Cloud and Sephiroth amidst the flames. It symbolises both the birth of their rivalry and the moment when Sephiroth definitively abandons his status as a hero to become the story’s primary threat.
