What it does that a phone cannot
Three things, and all of them are about where it can go.
It survives. Water, dust, knocks, cold. An action camera is built for conditions that would destroy a phone.
It mounts. On a helmet, chest, handlebars, board, car dashboard, dog. It films while your hands are free — which is the whole point.
It stabilises. Electronic stabilisation on current action cameras is remarkable — footage from a bike on a dirt track comes out smooth.
And Insta360 adds something of its own: cameras that film in every direction at once, letting you choose what to show afterwards — you do not have to aim correctly at the moment something happens.
What you need alongside
The camera alone is not enough, and this is the most common cause of disappointment.
A mount for your activity. Without the right mount, the camera stays in a drawer. Look at the mounts before buying — and think realistically about what you will do with it.
A memory card for continuous recording. High-resolution video writes a great deal, fast. You need a fast card built for video — a slow card makes the camera stop recording.
Spare batteries. Runtime in continuous recording is limited, and in cold it drops further. For a full day out you need at least two.
Two practical points that save footage
Lens fogging. In a sealed housing with a temperature difference — coming out of water, a winter day — moisture forms inside and the whole video comes out hazy. There are anti-fog inserts for exactly this, and they cost very little.
Wind noise. On a bike or motorbike, wind covers everything. If sound matters to you, you need a wind cover or an external microphone.
And a reminder for Greece: seawater. Rinse the camera with fresh water after every use in the sea — salt destroys the sealing gaskets and the buttons.
