In the Star Wars universe, the Imperial-I class Star Destroyer is the ultimate symbol of the Tarkin Doctrine, which aims to rule the galaxy through fear and a disproportionate display of brute force. Measuring 1,600 metres in length and armed with dozens of heavy turbo-lasers and ion cannons, this heavy cruiser serves as a mobile military base, a troop transport for waves of Stormtroopers, and a carrier for several squadrons of TIE fighters. Featured from the legendary opening scene of Episode IV (A New Hope) in the pursuit of Princess Leia’s Tantive IV, it alone is sufficient to subjugate entire star systems to the will of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. Its massive, angular silhouette, capable of blocking out the starlight above the occupied planets, makes it one of the most memorable, oppressive and iconic military structures in the history of science-fiction cinema.
