Tamagotchi was released on November 23, 1996. This "handheld care toy" became a big fad mainly among high school girls.
Afterward, it made a return in 2004 with Tamagotchi Connection that had a built-in infrared communication feature, and then a series of models followed with new fuctions and ways to play.
Since 1996, a total of about 91,000,000 units have been sold across the world. (Up until March 2023.)
On July 2023, the first built-in Wi-Fi model "Tamagotchi Uni" was released worldwide. You can meet Tamagotchi characters from around the world via the metaverse called "Tamaverse".
